Losing the only key to a vehicle feels like a catastrophe and is usually a straightforward morning of work. The process splits cleanly into two halves. The mechanical half produces a blade that operates the door and ignition, generated from the vehicle code or decoded directly from a lock. The electronic half convinces the immobiliser that the new key belongs, which is done through the diagnostic port with equipment matched to the platform. TC Locksmiths carries out both halves at the vehicle across Maple Heights-Lake Desire, WA.
Originating Versus Duplicating During Car Key Replacement in Maple Heights-Lake Desire, WA
Duplicating is copying an existing working key, which is quick and inexpensive. Originating is producing a key where none survives, using the vehicle code or a decode taken from the door lock, and it takes longer because the information has to be derived rather than traced.
This distinction is the single biggest driver of cost. Anyone who still holds one working key is in the cheap category, and staying there is a good argument for ordering a spare before it is needed.

Basic blade keys suit older vehicles and need cutting alone. Transponder keys add a chip that must be written or cloned. Remote head keys combine the blade with central locking buttons, and proximity or smart keys communicate with the car continuously to allow push button starting.
Flip keys, laser cut or high security blades and separate remote fobs are all supported. The technician confirms which family your vehicle uses from the registration before travelling.
A spare cut while your original still works typically costs a fraction of an all keys lost job. The moment to arrange one is the moment you realise you only have one.

With nothing left to copy, the technician reads the lock or the vehicle data to derive the cutting pattern, produces the blade, then enters the immobiliser through the diagnostic port to add the new key. Some platforms require a security code or a timed access window, which lengthens the visit without changing the outcome.
The final step matters as much as the first: previously stored keys are erased so that a lost set left in a car park cannot be used by whoever picks it up.
- ✓Blades cut by code or decoded from the vehicle lock
- ✓Transponder chips written, cloned or programmed
- ✓Remote and proximity keys paired to the receiver
- ✓Old or lost keys erased from immobiliser memory
- ✓Spare keys supplied at lower cost than originations
Keeping Car Key Replacement Costs Sensible in Maple Heights-Lake Desire, WA
Three habits save real money. Order a spare while an original works, replace a fob battery at the first sign of shortened range instead of waiting for total failure, and repair a worn ignition barrel rather than forcing a bent blade for another six months.
It is also worth asking for the vehicle key code to be recorded at the time of cutting. If a key is lost later, having that code on file shortens the next visit considerably.
